Faithful Presence
Tuesday 07 April 2026 09:30 Mission in Europe often moves slowly, but God works in unseen ways. This story from Austria reminds us that faithful, patient love can transform lives — even when change seems invisible.
For years, an ECMI couple in Austria has purposefully woven their lives into their local community. They hosted breakfasts, invited neighbours in, and listened to stories. Often, nothing seemed to change. Seasons passed, sometimes the work felt slow, almost invisible, as indeed the mission in Europe can sometimes feel—but they remained faithful.
Then one neighbour lost his job, under circumstances that were confusing and distressing for him. And the ECMI couple walked alongside him from the beginning: listening, praying, and encouraging him to explore Scripture. He began reading John’s Gospel, finding unexpected comfort in Jesus’ words.
Week by week, the meetings continued—walking, talking, praying. The neighbour shared his doubts, fears, and questions about God. Even when the future was uncertain, he began to sense that God might still have plans for him.
Finally, after several months, news came that he could return to work, with his character and integrity fully affirmed. On hearing this, he went straight to a local church, knelt before the altar, and thanked God.
Sometimes, mission in Europe is about faithful presence—walking with people patiently, trusting that God is working in hearts long before we see the results. That’s why ECMI places special value on long-term ministry, as sometimes, it takes years for someone to turn to God.
